PS6 Release Date Delayed to 2028-2029: Report

PlayStation 5 console and DualSense controller on desk

Bad news for impatient gamers: the PlayStation 6 launch is getting pushed back further than expected. Industry analyst David Gibson from MST Financial recently shared this insight in his report published on Japanese site Sandstone Insights. While Sony hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet, industry experts are convinced the company plans to significantly extend the PS5 lifecycle before jumping into the next generation.

When Will PS6 Actually Release?

Previously, gamers expected PlayStation 6 to drop around 2027, maybe 2028. Now analysts are predicting we won’t see it until 2028-2029 at the earliest. That means PS5 will remain the current-gen console for at least 8-9 years after its November 2020 launch. Yeah, that’s a long wait, but Sony has solid reasons for this decision.

Mark Cerny, the legendary PlayStation architect, actually hinted at this back in October 2025. While discussing new technologies for the future console, he mentioned: “It’s still very early for these technologies. They exist only in simulation, but the results look promising, and I’m very excited to implement them in a console in the coming years.” Notice he said “years,” not “months.”

Why Is Sony Delaying PS6?

The main culprit behind the delay? Expensive memory and storage components. Remember how AI is gobbling up all available chips for data centers? There’s fierce competition for critical components right now. RAM and SSD costs have skyrocketed, and Sony understandably doesn’t want to release a console with an astronomical price tag.

Here’s the thing: PS5 already costs more now than at its 2020 launch. Releasing PS6 today would mean either raising prices (scaring off buyers) or accepting lower profit margins. Neither option appeals to Sony.

But there’s good news for the company: PS5 is selling incredibly well. According to David Gibson, Sony’s third quarter exceeded expectations thanks to strong console and game sales. When your current generation is printing money, there’s no rush to move on.

What Technologies Await PS6?

Though PS6 hasn’t been officially announced, Sony and AMD have already revealed some details about technologies coming to the console. Project Amethyst, a joint collaboration between Sony and AMD, is already working on impressive innovations.

Three key technologies for PS6 include:

  • Radiance Cores – specialized cores for ray tracing built directly into the processor, freeing up GPU and CPU resources for significant performance gains
  • Neural Arrays – AI components that link GPU Compute Units together, boosting overall performance through maximum efficiency
  • Universal Compression – ambitious technology that analyzes all data and compresses it wherever possible

Additionally, PS6 will feature its own AI chip with custom SoC developed by Sony and AMD. The PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology (its improved Project Amethyst version) will continue evolving too.

How Are Gamers Reacting?

Interestingly, many players aren’t upset about the PS6 delay. On Reddit, gamers are actively discussing why extending the PS5 lifecycle is actually a smart move. One major reason: modern AAA games take 4-6 years to develop, sometimes longer.

“A seven-year console cycle doesn’t make sense anymore. Triple-A games barely manage to get developed in that timeframe, and the graphics improvements are so minimal they’re not worth it.”

Another gamer added that consoles should be more future-proof, noting we’re getting too few games from major developers per generation. Some speculate the delay connects directly to the AI boom, with one user commenting that memory and SSDs will remain expensive until the AI bubble bursts, making the delay a wiser decision.

The Price Concern

One major worry is PS6’s final price tag. Xbox Series X and PS5 already cost more than their 2020 launch prices. If Sony delays PS6 due to expensive components but still releases at a high price point, that could disappoint gamers. However, there’s hope that by 2028-2029, memory and storage prices will stabilize and drop.

No Official Confirmation Yet

Important note: Sony hasn’t officially confirmed any PS6 delays. This information comes from analyst reports and industry expert predictions. While David Gibson is a respected analyst with years of experience, his forecasts are based on financial reports and market trends, not direct Sony statements. Experts expect more information about Sony’s PS6 plans throughout 2026.
