Ubisoft Cancels Prince of Persia Remake After 6 Years

Armored man holds head beside cancelled game on monitor

Ubisoft has delivered crushing news to gaming fans worldwide: the highly anticipated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake has been officially cancelled after six years of development. This announcement came as part of the company’s “great reset,” which saw six projects terminated and seven others delayed. The cancellation has left developers, actors, and fans devastated.

Actress Learns About Cancellation Through WhatsApp

Perhaps the most heartbreaking aspect of this story involves actress Eman Ayaz, who dedicated three years to the project. She discovered the cancellation through a WhatsApp message from her brother rather than official company communication. In an emotional video, she described it as “the most devastating moment” of her career.

Just two months before the cancellation, Ayaz was filming promotional materials for what fans believe was the Prince of Persia remake. Despite breaking her leg, she continued working on the project, dreaming of its 2026 release. Now, bound by NDA agreements, she cannot officially name the game, but her career-defining work has been erased.

Development Troubles Behind the Scenes

The remake’s troubled history began in 2020 when Ubisoft’s Mumbai and Pune studios started development with a promised 2021 release. After two delays, the project was transferred to Ubisoft Montreal in 2022 for a complete restart. A Reddit developer using the name SocramVelmar revealed the game was “close to finish” but lacked unified vision and struggled with Ubisoft’s focus on open-world mechanics rather than the original’s linear action gameplay.

Ubisoft’s Financial Crisis

The cancellation reflects Ubisoft’s broader struggles. The company is cutting €200 million in costs, closing studios in Halifax and Stockholm, and implementing AI integration across projects. Their stock has reached a 14-year low, forcing difficult decisions about which projects continue.

The future of Prince of Persia remains uncertain, leaving fans wondering if this beloved franchise will ever receive proper treatment.
