Remember that cult classic from 2003? The one with Jade, her pig partner Pey’j, and that wild mix of stealth, action, and photo-hunting? Beyond Good & Evil captured hearts with its fresh story about fighting totalitarian regimes, but sales were modest. Now, its sequel Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been stuck in what gamers call “development hell” for 18 years.
Surviving the Development Hell
The journey has been brutal. Announced in 2008, restarted in 2017 with promises of open-world pirate adventures and space exploration, then silence. Fans watched nervously as Ubisoft recently underwent massive restructuring, canceling six projects including the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake.
Ubisoft’s Recent Shake-Up
The company’s reorganization into creative houses sparked fears that Beyond Good & Evil 2 would be axed. However, Ubisoft placed the game within Creative House 4, focusing on immersive fantasy worlds and narrative open-world adventures.
The Team Remains Committed
Creative Director Fawzi Mesmar addressed concerns directly on LinkedIn, stating:
“We remain committed and focused on delivering a remarkable game for players!”
Why Ubisoft Won’t Give Up
Several factors keep this project alive:
- The original Beyond Good & Evil earned cult status
- Promised features include procedural generation and cooperative gameplay
- Massive open world of planet Hillys with flying ships
- Strategic priority in Ubisoft’s open-world portfolio
Challenges Ahead
The project faces obstacles. Creator Michel Ancel departed in 2020, citing management issues, and now runs an animal sanctuary. The original game’s modest sales make this a risky investment. After 18 years, can fans still hold hope? Only time will tell.
