The annual State of the Game Industry survey from Game Developers Conference has dropped some fascinating insights into where developers want to build their next projects. And honestly, the numbers tell a pretty clear story about the current gaming landscape.
PC Dominance: The Numbers Don’t Lie
Over 2300 gaming professionals worldwide participated in this survey, and the results are eye-opening. PC gaming absolutely crushes the competition – a whopping 80% of developers said they want to create games for personal computers. That’s not just winning, that’s total domination.
Console numbers paint a different picture though. PlayStation 5 attracts 40% of developers, while Switch 2 sits at roughly 39%. But Xbox Series X/S? Only 20%. That’s half the interest compared to competitors, especially brutal considering 40% of developers were releasing on Xbox just a year ago.
Why Developers Love PC Development
The answer comes down to accessibility and economics. PC development is significantly easier to break into, especially for indie creators. Key advantages include:
- No publisher approval needed for every decision
- No expensive porting licenses required
- Steam allows almost anyone to publish
- Console development requires dev kits and publisher relationships
The Handheld Revolution
When it comes to handheld PC gaming, 40% of developers are ready to work with Steam Deck. Meanwhile, ROG Ally only interests 7%. Steam Deck has literally transformed the portable gaming market through its flexibility and openness.
Switch 2: The Secret Everyone Knows
Despite no official announcement, 8% of developers are already working with Switch 2 codebases – that’s roughly 250 people from over 3000 surveyed. The real number is likely higher since developers work under strict confidentiality. Interestingly, 32% expressed interest in Switch 2, making it the third most popular platform after PC at 62% and PS5 at 41%.
What Drives Platform Choices
Developers follow clear logic when choosing platforms:
- Audience reach: 78% consider this crucial
- Monetization model: 44%
- Store visibility: 43%
Developers need platforms that deliver revenue and prevent their games from getting lost in endless release streams.
The Future of Game Development
Microsoft’s multi-platform approach shows in their 2026 lineup – Fable launches on PS5 alongside Xbox, with Forza Horizon 6 following later. Only 13% of developers create games specifically for Game Pass, compared to 9% for PlayStation Plus. One-third of AAA developers work on live service games, while 56% worry about future industry layoffs. The era of console exclusivity has ended, and PC gaming reigns supreme.
