Hogwarts Legacy features a vast array of talents that radically change your playstyle: from spell enhancements to invincibility thanks to potions.

The most important rule to remember: you cannot reset your talents (respec) in the game. You won’t have enough skill points for everything. The maximum level in the game is 40. You’ll receive a total of 36 talent points, while there are 48 skills in total. The cost of a mistake is high, so in this guide we’ll break down the best skills to invest in first.

How Talents Work (Basics)

The talent tree does not unlock immediately, but only after completing the story quest “Jackdaw’s Rest. The game will automatically award you all the points for the previous levels.

The skill tree is divided into three tiers (access levels):

Level 5 (Unlocks the Basic Shooting Range)

Level 16 (Intermediate)

Level 22 (Highest Tier)

1. Best Core Talents

This branch contains skills that are essential for any playstyle.

Ancient Magic Throw Expertise:

Allows you to intercept and throw enemies’ own weapons back at them. Works perfectly in combination with the Expelliarmus spell (unlocked by Professor Gecat after the “Folios and Misadventures” quest). Knock the axe out of a goblin’s hands and instantly throw it back at him.

Protego Mastery — Lv. 22:

A perfect parry (when the two yellow rings above your head merge into one) not only defends but also releases a powerful shockwave that shatters enemy shields.

Stupefy Expertise — Lv. 22: A standard Stupefy only stuns and increases incoming damage. This talent causes the spell to deal direct, and quite significant, damage with every counterattack. The “Perfect Protego + Stupefy” combo turns you into a killing machine.

2. Best Spell Talents

These skills take your combat potential to a new level by adding powerful AoE damage (area-of-effect damage).

Confringo Mastery:

Upon hitting a target, the spell releases homing fireballs that ignite additional targets. Indispensable against spiders and infernals. You will obtain the spell itself in the quest “In the Shadow of the Crypt.”

Accio / Levioso Mastery: Allows you to pull or lift a group of nearby enemies into the air at once. Provides incredible crowd control.

Descendo Mastery: Slamming an enemy into the ground creates a devastating shockwave.

Lethal Combo: Lift a group of enemies with an upgraded Actio or Levioso (airborne targets take more damage), then bring them crashing down with Descendo.

Transformation Mastery:

A must-have skill. It turns an enemy not just into a barrel, but into an explosive barrel. You can throw it into a crowd of enemies or simply shoot it with basic attacks, resulting in an instant kill (one-shot).

3. Imbo Talents of the Room of Requirement

Many people underestimate potions, and they’re very wrong to do so. Hidden in this thread is a legal cheat for immortality.

Edurus Potion Potency: This is the best defensive upgrade in the game. The potion doesn’t just reduce damage; it makes you completely invulnerable for 20 seconds. What’s more, it automatically deflects any ranged attacks back at enemies (even spells that usually can’t be blocked, like red attacks or Petrificus Totalus from mages). You can find the ingredients in the world or buy them at Pepin’s shop in Hogsmeade.

4. Is it worth leveling up Stealth?

It’s all a bit ambiguous here.

Human Demiguise:

Definitely yes. The ability to run while invisible will save you a ton of time on stealth missions and when farming Eye Chests.

Petrificus Totalus (Lvl. 22):

It sounds cool (it kills several nearby enemies), but in practice, it’s not recommended. Enemies rarely stand close enough together for the talent to work properly. It’s better to spend your skill points on combat spells or potions.

(Note: If you plan to play as the Dark Wizard, the Dark Arts branch with Unforgivable Curses is also extremely powerful and allows you to wipe out entire camps with a single Avada Kedavra, but this is a choice suited to a specific playstyle.)
