Death in the Family takes place at the Carlisle manor in England. Your objectives are straightforward: eliminate Alexa Carlisle and retrieve the file on Arthur Edwards. The mission offers three distinct storylines, each providing a unique approach to achieving your goals.
Mission Objectives
Your primary tasks are to eliminate Alexa Carlisle and obtain Arthur Edwards’ dossier. These objectives remain constant regardless of which storyline you choose to pursue.
Full Map Overview
Means, Motive and Opportunity Storyline
This detective-focused storyline becomes available at mission start. You’ll investigate the death of Zachary Carlisle and use your findings to get close to Alexa.
Getting Inside the Manor
Head toward the main gate where you’ll witness guards searching a private detective before entry. This triggers the storyline. The guards won’t let you through, so you’ll need an alternative route.
Look for a gap in the wall to the right of the main gate. Slip through while staying behind bushes for cover. Cross the stream to the right and use the bridge. Regular staff won’t raise alarms, but security personnel will.
Once in the courtyard, move right using bushes as cover until you reach the right side of the main entrance. Watch the bodyguards search the detective before he enters. An open window sits to the right of the entrance. Climb through and hide behind the luggage in the hallway.
Wait for the private detective to enter the corridor. Knock him out, take his clothes, and hide his body in the wardrobe on the right. You’re now ready to meet Alexa Carlisle.
Meeting Alexa and Starting the Investigation
Enter the foyer to meet Alexa Carlisle. After speaking with her, talk to butler Mr. Fernsby to begin the investigation. He’ll escort you to the second floor where Zachary Carlisle’s bedroom is located.
Examining Zachary’s Bedroom for Evidence
Enter the bedroom and use your camera to scan the following clues:
Scan Zachary’s body on the bed to learn he died from poison. Scan the whiskey bottle and glass on the nightstand. Check the laptop in the right corner – you’ll discover Zachary was shopping for shoes online the night before, which doesn’t fit someone planning suicide.
A suicide note rests on the table near the fireplace. Take it to compare the handwriting with other family members’ documents later. On the left side of the room facing the balcony, you’ll find bookshelves. Look for a book lever to the left of the stairs that opens a secret passage.
Inside the hidden room behind a mirror, you’ll find a map that serves as another important clue.
Interviewing the Suspects
Return to the foyer and speak with Mr. Fernsby. Press F1 to open the data menu and view the suspect list:
Gregory (Alexa’s eldest son)
Edward (Alexa’s middle son)
Rebecca (Alexa’s youngest daughter)
Emma (Gregory’s wife)
Patrick (Emma and Gregory’s son)
Mr. Fernsby (the butler)
Patrick can be found in the library left of the foyer, playing billiards. He’ll mention being busy and ask to meet later. He confirms he was with maid Rose during Zachary’s death. Patrick considers Zachary unambitious and believes he could have committed suicide, though he suggests investigating the butler.
Rebecca will arrive at the trophy room left from the library. She explains that Edward and Gregory went to the local pub after drinking at the manor. Emma acted strangely, but Rebecca doesn’t know details. Patrick disappeared after dinner and may be in trouble. Rebecca herself was in her room during the death, participating in a conference call on her laptop. She remembers Mr. Fernsby leaving Zachary’s room that evening.
Gregory is located in the upper room opposite the trophy room (check your map with M). He confirms being at the bar with Edward during Zachary’s death. He left because he couldn’t stand anxious Emma and annoying sister Rebecca. Gregory mentions Zachary enjoyed drinking and collecting rare plants. He finds his mother’s mistakes amusing and is enjoying the current situation.
Emma is in the same room as Gregory. She went to bed around 8 PM when Gregory and Edward left for the pub, suffering from migraines. She describes Zachary as uncomfortable in social settings but passionate about rare plants. Emma believes Alexa shares blame for Zachary’s suicide by making him a recluse. Zachary appeared depressed after stopping communication with his sister.
Edward waits in the dining room opposite. He confirms Gregory’s alibi – both were at the pub during Zachary’s death. He’s uncertain Zachary would commit suicide and suggests questioning Rebecca about her lengthy conversation with Zachary. Edward is troubled by Alexa’s faked death and Zachary’s suicide.
Rose (the maid) is in the staff quarters below the kitchen from the dining room. Look for the blonde woman sitting alone, holding her head. Talk to Rose to confirm Patrick’s alibi.
After interviewing everyone, only Gregory and Edward have solid alibis as they were together at the pub.
Investigating the Locked Rooms
Rebecca’s Room is on the second floor to the left. The door is locked. At the corridor’s end to the right of her door, you’ll find a window. Climb out and move right along the ledge until you reach another open window leading into Rebecca’s room.
Inside, examine the laptop on the desk, then scan Rebecca’s diary by the fireplace. The handwriting differs from Zachary’s suicide note, proving Rebecca’s innocence. Behind the Dalmatian painting right of the fireplace is an entrance to a secret room.
Gregory and Emma’s Bedroom is in another wing on the second floor and is also locked. Enter the bathroom to the right of their bedroom and exit through the window. Move right along the building’s ledge until you reach a balcony, then enter the bedroom.
Key evidence in the bedroom includes a letter from Emma’s mother on the nightstand to the right. It reveals Emma’s real father was Montgomery, older brother of Alexa and Zachary. Rumors suggest the latter two killed him.
A walking stick with a bulldog head sits left of the bedroom entrance. Behind a screen in the corner near the stick, you’ll find shoes – scan them with your camera. Between the suitcases and screen by the fireplace lies a greenhouse key tag on the floor, though the key itself is missing.
If you go down to the sitting room where Emma and Gregory are located and exit through the glass door to the terrace, you can use your camera to spot tracks on the ground. They match the shoes you found.
Optional Secret Room exists on the second floor in a book nook. Look for a point of interest behind a wall. Find a floor button and use the bulldog walking stick on it to access a hidden room. Inside you’ll find Montgomery’s letter and some coins. This doesn’t affect the investigation.
Mr. Fernsby’s Office
The butler’s office is on the first floor near the kitchen and staff quarters. Two methods exist for entry:
Method 1: Wait for an opportunity to knock out the butler and take his key.
Method 2 (Recommended): Behind the garden around the manor, you’ll find the greenhouse. All doors are locked. Behind the greenhouse, 2-3 workers are present with a crowbar lying on a crate. Grab it and return to Fernsby’s office doors. Pry them open with the crowbar.
Inside the office, locate these clues: a master key on the left side of the room, Zachary’s diary in the fireplace, a list with Fernsby’s handwriting on the desk, and a jar of poison on the windowsill. However, this poison is NOT what killed Zachary, proving Fernsby’s innocence.
The Greenhouse – Critical Evidence
Before meeting Alexa, you must visit the greenhouse. Use the crowbar to pry open the side door where nobody is watching.
Inside, examine the mini-laboratory. On the right lies a manual – scan it with your camera. You’ll learn that Emma prepared the poison that killed Zachary and planned to poison Alexa next. You can also find the poisonous flower here.
Meeting Alexa and Making an Accusation
After interviewing all suspects and examining the greenhouse, Rebecca’s room, Emma and Gregory’s bedroom, plus Fernsby’s office, find the butler and tell him you’ve completed your investigation. He’ll escort you to Alexa on the third floor.
In conversation with Alexa, you can accuse either the butler or Emma. The correct answer is Emma. She murdered Zachary and planned to poison Alexa as revenge for her father Montgomery’s death.
After accusing Emma, request Arthur Edwards’ dossier as your reward instead of money. Alexa will open the safe and give you the documents. She’ll then step out onto the balcony.
Eliminating Alexa Carlisle
Despite obtaining the dossier, you still need to eliminate Alexa. Follow her to the balcony and push her over. Mission complete.
Alternative Approach: If you chose money as your reward (or don’t want to request the dossier), push Alexa off the balcony, then return to her office. Wait for two guards to step onto the balcony. Eavesdrop on their conversation to learn the safe is behind the dog painting. A button on Alexa’s chair removes the painting and reveals the safe.
Safe Code – 1975
If you didn’t receive the dossier from Alexa, you’ll need to crack the safe. The four-digit code comes from clues shown as four pictures:
Clock – The desk clock sits on the side of the room, opposite the fireplace (left of the interrogation room door). Below it is the number 1.
Telescope – Climb the stairs upward. Above the telescope on the wall you’ll see the number 9.
Fireplace – Located downstairs. Inside the fireplace on the wall is the number 7.
Moose Head – Hangs above the entrance door. Next to it is the number 5.
Safe Code: 1975
Enter the code, retrieve the dossier, and exit the location.
A Day to Remember Storyline
This storyline lets you arrange a fatal accident during a family photoshoot.
Starting the Storyline
After infiltrating the manor grounds, locate the greenhouse on the side. At the start, you’ll find a photographer talking with a maid preparing for the photoshoot. Eavesdrop on their conversation to trigger the storyline.
Wait for the photographer to leave, then follow him. Find a moment when he’s alone (if a guard interferes, deal with him first). Knock out the photographer and take his clothes. Behind bushes near the electrical box, there’s a container – hide the body there.
Preparing the Accident
As the photographer, walk around the manor and stop at the hearse. Nearby is a side entrance where two guards are talking. From them you can learn about a bank safety deposit box containing a copy of Edwards’ file.
A fuse lies on a crate nearby. Take it and return to the electrical box that was missing a fuse. Insert it into the panel. Alternatively, two fuses can be found in utility rooms on the manor’s first floor.
Now prepare the trap by finding a screwdriver (lying on a bench near the photoshoot location) and damaging the electrical outlet with it. Turn off the tap feeding the fountain so water spills onto the ground.
Take a couple of test photos of the maid. She’ll then call the entire family for the photoshoot. During photography, Alexa, sitting on a metal chair, will be electrocuted by the damaged outlet and spilled water.
Remember: After eliminating Alexa, you still need to obtain the dossier. Infiltrate the third floor to Alexa’s office and crack the safe (code 1975).
Her Final Resting Place Storyline
This storyline allows you to eliminate Alexa at the cemetery during a ceremony.
Starting the Storyline
Infiltrate the manor grounds by any method and head to the cemetery on the side of the manor with a ruined building. Before the entrance, a maid and groundskeeper (gravedigger) will be talking. Eavesdrop on their conversation to trigger the storyline.
Preparing for the Ceremony
Enter the cemetery. In the far left section, find two trees where birds are nesting (three nests total on trees). Eliminate the birds – you’ll need a silenced pistol. Stand in an inconspicuous spot and shoot down the nests.
Wait for an opportunity and knock out the gravedigger (man in a top hat). Take his clothes. Make sure to hide the body well – drag it into bushes by the stream. Then inform the maid that everything is ready for the ceremony.
Eliminating Alexa
When Alexa arrives at the cemetery, converse with her and accompany her from place to place according to the ceremony. When she approaches her grave and stands at the edge of the pit, push her in. Grab the shovel and bury the grave to cover your tracks.
Obtaining the Dossier
Eliminating Alexa isn’t enough to complete the mission. You must obtain Arthur Edwards’ dossier. Two methods exist:
Method 1 – Through the Office Safe: Climb to the manor’s second floor, exit through a window, and ascend the drainpipe to the third floor. In Alexa’s office, one bodyguard is inside and two more are on the balcony. Access the safe (press the button on Alexa’s chair to remove the dog painting) and enter code 1975. Retrieve the documents.
Method 2 – Through the Bank Safety Deposit Box: Obtain both access tokens from Rebecca and Mr. Fernsby (the butler). You’ll need to knock them out or eliminate them. Then retrieve the dossier copy from the bank safety deposit box.
Additional Information
Bank Safety Deposit Box: You may hear several times about a bank safety deposit box containing a copy of Arthur Edwards’ file. Access requires two tokens from Rebecca Carlisle and Mr. Fernsby. This provides an alternative to cracking the safe.
Choosing Your Storyline: All three storylines lead to the same result – eliminating Alexa Carlisle and obtaining the dossier. Choose whichever best matches your playstyle.
Stealth: For the best completion, avoid unnecessary confrontations with security. Regular workers and staff won’t raise alarms if you’re wearing an appropriate disguise.
