S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 may seem harsh and overloaded with mechanics in the early stages. The main rule you need to grasp right away: this isn’t a Bethesda RPG like Fallout; it’s a hardcore survival game. You need to take things slowly here. Go on runs with minimal supplies, collect loot, return to base, sell what you don’t need, and keep only the bare essentials. Explore locations gradually, without forgetting to eat and sleep.

Below are all the key tips to help you not only survive but also get rich in the Zone.

⚔️ Combat System and Tactics

In the early stages of the game, try to avoid open combat. Resources are very limited at the start, so you should focus on finding gear rather than engaging in firefights.

  • Use cover and maneuver: Enemies deal massive damage. Hide behind walls and constantly change your position to break line of sight. This will confuse the enemy and give you a chance to flank them.
  • Single-shot mode: Switch your weapon to single-shot mode. This conserves ammunition, reduces barrel wear, and improves accuracy. Reserve automatic fire only for emergencies in narrow corridors.
  • Aim for vulnerable spots: Always try to shoot for the head, especially when dealing with mutants.
  • Stealth and the knife: Take out lone enemies with your knife. This saves ammunition and doesn’t attract the attention of others. Keep an eye on the blue sound meter below the compass—it shows how loud you are.
  • Dangerous Mutants (Bureers and Bloodsuckers): Bureers can knock weapons out of your hands. Remember: the Scythe pistol is a quest item, so you can’t drop it. Use it in these fights.
  • Retreating is fine: You can outrun most mutants. They rarely drop valuable loot, so wasting ammo and health on them outside of quests is pointless.
  • Use anomalies: Lure enemies into anomalies. Bloodsuckers avoid anomalous zones, which you can use to your advantage. If you really don’t want to fight, lure the mutant toward the nearest group of friendly NPCs.
  • Peek around corners: Actively use the cover mechanic to shoot without exposing yourself to enemy fire.

🎒 Inventory and Loot Management

Overloading is your worst enemy. It slows you down and drains your stamina faster. Don’t carry around 60 first-aid kits and 30 sausages. Leave your supplies at base to free up space for valuable loot.

  • The Overload Trick (Body Trick): If you’ve found a lot of valuable loot but can’t carry it, pack up to 30 kg of loot into a bandit’s corpse and drag the body behind you. It’s slow, but it lets you carry much more weight.
  • Don’t pick up broken weapons and armor: They’re worth next to nothing. Instead, unload any weapons you find and take the ammunition—it weighs less and is worth much more.
  • Break open crates: They often contain ammunition and medical supplies. But be careful: sometimes there might be a live grenade inside.
  • Caches as storage: Use the caches (marked on the map) as temporary storage. Leave heavy items there and come back for them later.
  • Quick Access: Assign healing items to quick-access slots so you don’t have to open your inventory right in the middle of combat.

🟢 Artifacts and Anomalies

Artifacts can radically change your playstyle, but finding them requires preparation.

  • Bleeding Artifact: Find the artifact in the fire anomaly near the Cooling Tower as soon as possible. It cures bleeding, allowing you to completely stop using bandages.
  • Stamina Artifact: Look for it in electrical anomalies. Maximum stamina will make exploring the Zone much more comfortable.
  • How to farm artifacts (Exploit): Save your game 150 meters before the anomaly. Enter it. If the artifact that drops isn’t the one you need—just load the save, and the artifact will respawn.
  • Protect your weapons: While searching for artifacts, stow your primary weapon in your backpack so it doesn’t take damage from anomalies.
  • Artifact Containers: Buy or find a scientific suit (such as SEVA) as soon as possible. These suits have built-in lead containers. They glow green in the inventory slot and allow you to carry artifacts without taking radiation damage. Be sure to upgrade your anomaly detector at the first opportunity.

💰 Economy, Trade, and Repairs

Proper allocation of coupons (money) is key to success. Don’t buy basic gear at the start of the game; instead, find it in caches or loot it from corpses.

Color coding of cartridges:

  • White: Standard.
  • Black: Armor-piercing (for heavily armored targets).
  • Blue: Long-range / sniper.
  • Yellow: For unarmored targets (ideal against mutants).

Secrets to earning and saving money:

  • Mechanic Prices: Talk to the mechanics highlighted in green on the map—they’re friendly and offer discounts. White markers are neutral. Red ones are enemies.
  • Don’t repair junk: Don’t waste resources repairing weapons or armor that have been completely destroyed in the early stages. Save materials for high-level gear. However, if your good gear is only slightly damaged—repair it right away. Minor repairs cost pennies, but restoring a gun smashed to smithereens will cost a fortune.
  • Scythian Pistol: An excellent starting weapon. It deals decent damage, and repairs cost next to nothing.
  • Restocking: Merchants restock their goods after you sleep. If you need a lot of ammo: buy it, sleep, then buy it again.
  • Quick cash: If you need coupons urgently, talk to the bartenders. They always have endless small tasks (kill dogs, clear out bandits) that can be completed quickly.

🧭 Survival and Exploration

The Zone operates by its own rules. Ignoring a character’s basic needs will result in death.

  • Day and Night Cycle: Plan your excursions. Leave camp at dawn and return before dark. It’s too dangerous in the Zone at night.
  • Sleep and Food: You must sleep every 4 in-game days. Otherwise, your character will start falling asleep on the move, which will critically reduce combat effectiveness. Hunger also impairs shooting and stealth stats.
  • Working with the Map: Place your own markers to mark dangerous zones, ambush spots, or locations you want to return to. Highlight the necessary markers so they appear directly on the compass.
  • Don’t rush the story: Progressing too quickly through the main questline can block access to side quests or turn certain factions hostile. Do side quests—they’re the safest source of good income.
  • Save often: The Zone is unpredictable. A bug, a random anomaly, or an unexpected horde of mutants can instantly cut your journey short.
  • Talk to random stalkers: Lone travelers in the wilderness are often willing to trade supplies or food for a good deal.
