Home Town is the prologue chapter where Sarah gives Joel a birthday watch, then an outbreak begins. The chapter ends with Sarah’s death after Joel, Sarah, and Tommy attempt to escape the city.

What to Do as Sarah in the House?

Sarah wakes after Tommy’s phone call and must explore the house to find Joel. Check the birthday card on Sarah’s desk, read the newspaper in the bathroom, and watch the epidemic news broadcast on the TV in the living room.

1. Go downstairs to the first floor.
2. Check the missed calls on the phone (right side of the room).
3. Enter the office on the left side.
4. Joel arrives and shoots the infected neighbor who breaks in.

How to Escape the City as Joel?

After the neighbor attack, Tommy drives Joel and Sarah through the city. Traffic jams and infected block the roads, leading to a car crash. Joel must then carry Sarah through hostile streets to the city exit.

1. Break the car window after the crash.
2. Pick up Sarah.
3. Run through the streets toward the city outskirts.
4. Turn left into the alley at the burning theater.
5. Fight infected while moving through the alley.
6. Enter and exit the house to bypass blocked streets.
7. Continue to the military checkpoint at the city edge.

Tommy stays behind to hold off infected at the house exit. At the checkpoint, a soldier kills approaching infected but receives orders to shoot Joel and Sarah. Dodge the soldier’s gunfire until Tommy arrives and kills the soldier. Sarah dies from bullet wounds before Joel can escape.
