Pywel is filled with tempting riches, from expensive paintings in noble mansions to valuable livestock. However, Crimson Desert has built-in safeguards to prevent accidental theft. To become a master thief, you need to know how the “Mask System” and “Heat Zones” work.
1. The Outlaw’s Essential: How to Get a Mask
You cannot interact with “owned” items unless you are disguised.
- Where to Buy: Visit a Back Alley Shop. The easiest one to find is on the Eastern road near Hernand (West side of the river, right by the Livestock Black Market).
- Cost: 10 Bronze Coins.
- Alternative: Masks can occasionally be looted from bandit corpses during world encounters.

Safety Tip: Always unequip your mask using the Left D-pad radial when entering friendly cities. Keeping it on may cause NPCs to react aggressively or prevent you from talking to quest-givers.
2. The Mechanics of a Crime
Once your mask is on, you can pick up almost anything. Here is what happens next:
- The Red Ring (Detection Zone): Immediately upon stealing, a red circle appears on your map. This is the “witness check” area.
- Reputation Loss: You will lose faction reputation the moment you steal, even if no one sees you.
- Witnesses: If a civilian sees you, they will sprint to the nearest guard. If you don’t exit the Red Ring before they reach a guard, you’ll face a “Wanted” status.
- Consequences: Getting caught leads to hefty silver fines or jail time, which can strip you of your current buffs.
3. Profitable Crimes: What to Steal?
If you’re short on Silver in the early game, target these high-value activities:
Mansion Heists
Rich estates often contain Jewelry Boxes and Paintings. These are lightweight but sell for significant amounts at fences.
Livestock Poaching
You can physically pick up small animals (like sheep or chickens) and carry them to the Livestock Black Market (near Hernand) for quick cash.
Wagon Theft
Stealing a horse-drawn carriage is one of the most lucrative crimes.
- Where to Sell: Take stolen wagons to a Wagon Fence.
- Location: Look East of Hernand, on the road heading South from Halssius Apothecary.

4. Vandalism and Chaos
Be careful with your riding! Breaking fences, smashing market stalls, or trampling property in view of NPCs counts as Vandalism. While the fines are lower than theft, repeated offenses will turn local guards hostile on sight.
Summary: Crime Quick-Reference
| Action | Required Item | Risk | Reward |
| Pickpocketing | Mask | Low (if hidden) | Materials/Silver |
| Looting Houses | Mask | Medium | Rare Art/Jewelry |
| Wagon Theft | None/Mask | High | Large Silver Payout |
| Poaching | None/Mask | Medium | Livestock Sales |
You can have your fines forgiven at church.

BONUS! Bank Heist in Hernand (Best Silver Farm)
Bank robbery is the most profitable activity, especially useful at the start of the game for quickly raising capital.
Step-by-step instructions:
- Preparation: Make sure you have a mask and a special key. Clear your inventory in advance—you’ll be collecting a lot of loot.
- Entrance: The bank is located in the city of Hernand. Put on your mask before entering.
- Infiltration: Go inside and head to the room on the left. The guard at the vault entrance usually won’t stop you if you’re wearing a mask.
- Safe Zone: Be sure to wait until the vault door closes! You are completely safe inside the locked room.
- Collect loot: Open all boxes and chests. You will receive bags of coins and valuable resources.
- Exit: Do not leave the room until the red robbery indicator disappears. Once it’s gone, you’re “clean” again and can safely leave the bank.
Important: The bank is fully reset (cleared) every 5 in-game days. You can repeat this indefinitely.
